Local Albums & Singles april/may/2000 - PETER McLENNAN Te Kupu, aka D Word from the Upper Hutt Posse, returns with one album in two versions: one in Mäori, the other in English. Ko Te Matakahi Kupu means 'the words which penetrate' and this recording is word-heavy, hitting hard on a myriad of subjects that will spin your head around. The Words are accompanied by some wicked beats and tasty tunes, with scratching from DJ Rhys B, guest vocals by Emma Paki and Wiya of Upper Hutt Posse and trumpet from the film director and ex-Blerta muso Geoff Murphy. There are rap, funk, soul and reggae elements here, all vying for your attention. There are lots of messages and sometimes it may get a little hardcore for your ears but I think the most important message here is 'listen'. Wake up your mind! |
